
MEET J. JEROME
NEW LEADERSHIP DELIVERING RESULTS FOR OUR COMMUNITY
Dr. J. Jerome Newton, a Mount Olive, NC native, is the son of Mrs. Bernice Newton and the late Colon P. Newton. He is the father of three daughters and has three grandsons. He has six siblings and two goddaughters. As a child, he attended Saint Mark Free Will Baptist Church and received his formative years in education at George Washington Carver High School both in Mount Olive, NC. He completed his high school years at Southern Wayne High School in Dudley, NC and was the Vice President of his Senior Class.
Upon graduating from Southern Wayne High School, Dr. Newton attended Winston-Salem State University, Winston Salem, NC and upon graduating, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Maine Corps, being the third graduate to receive such a commission. He served honorably for twenty plus years as an Officer in many places abroad- Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Thailand, Italy, Republic of Panama, to name a few. He was the first Winston Salem State University student to retire from active duty as a commissioned Marine Corps Officer. Upon his retirement, Dr. Newton taught school at various grade levels in Maryland for 8 years before serving 3 years as a Small Business Specialist, in the Office of The Deputy Secretary of Education in Washington, DC.
Dr. Newton holds a Master of Divinity Degree from Howard University and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Virginia Union University. Additional studies include Boston University, Hawaii Pacific University and Texas Christian University. Dr. Newton is the founding Pastor of Rock of Faith Christian Church, Clinton Maryland, now relocated to Mount Olive, NC. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Religion at the University of Mount Olive, Mount Olive, NC. Dr. Newton serves on the C. E. “Big House” Gaines Hall of Fame committee and is also a Hall of Fame Inductee at Winston Salem State University.
He is the author of “Engaging the Silent Sufferers”, “From Guilt to Glory” and is presently working on other pending publications.
In 2013 Dr. Newton returned home to aid in the care of his mother who was diagnosed with
Dementia. A lifetime member of Carver Alumni and Friends Association, Inc., he was appointed Interim National President by the National Board of Directors following the untimely transition of President Granger Martin, Sr.
Dr. Newton attributes his success to a little 5’2’’ lady who carried a big whip, his mother, Mrs. Bernice Newton. She has always been his inspiration.
